Africa is known for its abundance of handmade crafts that include bags, carvings, paintings, jewelry, and African print materials that are now openly embraced worldwide. Simba Crafts aims to bridge the gap between Africa and other global markets by enabling easy access to existing and constantly upcoming African merchandise.

Growing up in Kenya’s rural community of Kangundo tucked 30 miles away from Nairobi, the capital city, was certainly a humble beginning. Our father’s love for nature resulted in the creation of the Preston Mutinda Wildlife Foundation, a non-profit organisation that emphasizes on the importance of wildlife and environmental conservation. My mother, together with a group of women from the local community, meet on a frequent basis to work on different community supporting projects. They utilize local natural and recycled materials to expertly create a handiwork of bags and a variety of intricate jewelry.

Due to lack of working space, the Community Center has been a great resource that brings the women together to work on these projects when it’s not in use for other activities. The women always wear cheerful expressions and can be heard chanting their favorite songs and catching up on the latest on goings in the community as they work on their projects.

Simba Crafts products are a direct result of this initiative. The website provides a platform to promote these unique products. The sale proceeds are re-invested to expand the project and enable the initiation of other similar ventures. As a result, more job opportunities are created among the women as well as continued community development through projects such as clean water provision and efficient energy initiatives, among others.
